Un Sospiro (meaning ‘a sigh’) is a slow, melancholic piece in 4/4 time. It begins in Eb minor and modulates to C minor. Keep the left hand soft throughout, and imagine that helium balloons are tied to that wrist to give a feeling of lightness. Make the melody sing by varying the dynamic contrast in the right hand. Use the pedal, but listen carefully for smudges, and focus on half damping where the pedal is neither up nor down. Fingering in the left hand can be a little tricky, so write down the fingers in areas that give you difficulty. Lots of flats can be a little scary, but intermediate pianists will be able to handle this piece without a problem.
