David Hicken’s 2025 Online Piano Competition
Who can enter the competition?
Anyone! The competition is open to pianists of all ages and abilities from anywhere in the world. Whether you’re a beginner, amateur, or experienced musician, you are warmly invited to participate.
Is there an age limit?
No. There are no age categories or restrictions. Everyone competes on an equal footing based on the piece they choose to perform.
Do I have to memorize my piece?
No. Memorization is not required. You may use sheet music during your performance.
How do I choose which list to select a piece from?
You are free to choose any one piece from List A (Lower Intermediate), List B (Intermediate), or List C (Advanced).
I recommend choosing a piece that:
- Matches your current technical level
- Allows you to play musically and confidently
- Highlights your personal strengths as a pianist
Can I submit more than one video or enter multiple times?
No. Each participant may submit only one entry for the competition.
What should my video look like?
Your video must:
- Be recorded in one continuous, unedited take
- Clearly show your face and both hands throughout the performance
- Be uploaded to YouTube as public or unlisted
Important: No visual or audio editing is allowed. The performance must be natural and authentic.
Do I need professional recording equipment?
No. Many successful entries are recorded on a phone or tablet. What matters most is:
- Clear video (good lighting, stable angle)
- Good audio (quiet environment, well-balanced sound)
When is the deadline to enter?
All entries must be submitted by November 1, 2025 at 11:59 PM (your local time).
When will winners be announced?
Winners will be announced on November 7, 2025, and notified by email. Results will also be posted on www.davidhicken.com.
What is the entry fee?
The entry fee is $49 USD and must be paid before submitting your video.
How do I pay the entry fee?

How are performances judged?
While specific judging criteria may vary slightly by list, entries are generally evaluated on:
- Technical accuracy
- Musical interpretation
- Tone and control
- Communication and expression
- Overall presentation
Will I receive feedback?
Due to the volume of entries, individual feedback is not guaranteed. However, winners may receive personalized comments or recognition.
