The Time I Played for Elizabeth Taylor

The Time I Played for Elizabeth Taylor

Years ago, I was Director of Music at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills, California.

My role involved directing the choir and playing the organ for regular services, as well as weddings and funerals. Being in Beverly Hills, it wasn’t unusual for well-known figures to attend from time to time. One particular occasion has always stayed with me.

I was asked to play for the funeral of the butler of Doris Duke. She was a well-known heiress who, upon her death, left her estate to him. In turn, he donated significant sums to causes supporting the fight against AIDS.

Because of this, a number of prominent figures connected to that cause were present that day.

While I was seated at the organ in the balcony, I suddenly noticed a strong and unmistakably elegant perfume. Curious, I glanced into the small mirror I used to keep an eye on the service below. That was when I saw her.

Elizabeth Taylor was being escorted into the church.

She was followed by José Eber and Ricardo Montalbán.

It was one of those surreal moments. I was up in the organ loft simply doing my job, yet at the same time playing for one of the most iconic figures in the world.

Not something you expect when you sit down at the organ for a service.

Your blogs are always so poignant, each one so different from the last. I truly hope you continue writing them — they offer a way for us to know you beyond the music.
Having said that, I must add this: we can’t smell your aftershave from here, but your presence is unmistakable in every note you play. This time you’re not in an organ loft, but on a podium — and instead of playing for a church congregation, you’re delighting the whole world. Thank you.
