A remarkable organ, masterfully played

I’m totally struck — by a chapel organ and the many ways it can speak. One of its voices is an earthy, embracing warmth, carried by a powerful, vibrating sound that drew me in immediately, goosebumps included. This organ has quite a presence, a personality — and David Hicken brings that personality fully to life.

His album Symphony Gothique, recorded on this very organ, is a sweeping journey through organ styles, including Boëllmann’s dramatic and colourful Suite Gothique, Stanley’s bright, energetic, yet lyrical Voluntary, and Mulet’s vivid and radiant Carillon-Sortie — one of the most sparkling interpretations I’ve heard!

David moves through this repertoire and its brilliant showpieces with a clarity, technical ease, and control that feel effortless. His playing is confident without being showy — grounded, assured, and deeply responsive to the instrument beneath his hands.

He coaxes the organ to reveal so many different colours, sounds, and characters that enrich every piece on the album. In doing so, he plays with the organ, not on it — this interaction is the real magic of the recording.

I’m in awe

I have always liked organ music, but mostly because of my interest in the awesome instrument. But David Hicken’s music made me gain a greater respect for its incredible musical versatility. The brilliant musicality and precision playing of Symphonie Gothique is not only a testament to David Hicken’s artistry, but also a celebration of this true queen of instruments!
