I just played this piece as a prelude tonight for the Christmas service and the congregation loved it. It was also a pleasure to play. Thank you David and Merry Christmas!
Beautiful and interesting piece on "Carol of the bells (Ščedryk). It also contains quotes from "We wish you a merry Christmas" and "God rest ye merry gentlmen." In the original Ukrainian song "Ščedryk", the flight of a swallow announces spring after a cold winter. "We wish you a merry Christmas", as everyone knows, also wishes a happy new year. And "God rest ye merry gentlemen" speaks about comfort, joy, true love and brotherhood.
In these dramatic and painful times, all current topics. Even a hope for better times.
So the beauty of Hicken's piece, in my opinion, goes beyond the Christmas mood.
A fantastic piece which I’m practicing, having played the piano version. Worth listening to David play it to inspire!
I bought the organ version of the piece. It's quite catchy and beloved by the audience. So my point of critic is only small:
The whole piece has a very piano-like feel to it ; I would have loved more pedalworks, which also surely would support the whole carillon idea of the piece. But other than that- a great addition to my repertoire!
