David Hicken International Piano Competition 2023

Rules & Regulations


 

 

1. The David Hicken International Piano Competition is an annual competition organized by ICM-Thailand.

2. DHIPC is open to candidates of all nationalities with no age limits.

3. The deadline for application is 1 October 2023.

4. Competition date is 21 October 2023, at Yamaha Music Hall, Bangkok Thailand

5. Candidates will perform live in Bangkok, or via video submission.

 

Categories

Category C - Challenging

Category B - Less Challenging

Category A - Least Challenging

 

Application fees

Application fees are as follows:

Category C - one piece €80 - two pieces €120

Category B - one piece €70 - two pieces €105

Category A - one piece €70 - two pieces €105

 

Repertoire Guidelines

1. Participants must choose pieces appropriate for their level from the repertoire list of 147 pieces. No other works will be accepted. (Click here for list of set works)

2. A maximum of two pieces is allowed for each category

3. Works do not need to be performed from memory

 

Video submission guidelines

1. Video must be unedited and clearly show the applicant’s hands and face.

2. Description of the recording (applicant’s name in full, title of piece) must be clearly stated in English only.

3. Professional recording is not compulsory, but the video and audio quality must be reasonable with minimal background noise.

4. Submissions must be uploaded to YouTube and submit the URL link only. Video must not be set to private.

5. No changes of repertoire will be permitted after the application has been submitted and accepted.

 

Marking Criteria

Participants will be evaluated using a 100 point system based on five marking criteria.

• Stylistic awareness

• Technical ability

• Musicality

• Sound maturity

• General presentation

 

 Awards

• Gold 85 points and above

• Silver 75 - 84

• Bronze 65 - 74

• Participation 64 and below

The judge’s decisions are final and cannot be appealed.

All participants will receive a certificate of achievement based on the awarded marks. 

 

Prizes

Category C - First place winner will receive €1000, a copy of Dorico Pro Music Notation Software (generously provided by Steinberg), a $300 gift certificate to davidhicken.com, a one-hour online session with David, as well as have a video of their performance uploaded to David's YouTube channel.

Second place will receive €200

Third place will receive €100

 

Category B first prize €500, copy of Dorico Elements Music Notation Software (generously provided by Steinberg), a $200 gift certificate to davidhicken.com

Second place will receive €200

Third place will receive €100

 

Category A first prize €250, a $100 gift certificate to davidhicken.com

Second place will receive €200

Third place will receive €100

 

General Rules

1. Application fees are non-refundable.

2. By submitting an application online and subsequently participating in DHIPC 2023, the applicant accepts and agrees to abide by all the rules and regulations as stated.

3. The DHIPC committee reserves the right to make any changes to the rules, schedule and any information relating to the prizes at any time.

4. The organising committee reserves the right to video broadcast and to post competition  performances on website and other media without payment of compensation to the contestants.
